Portrait of Albert Pinkham Ryder

Albert Pinkham Ryder

American 1847–1917

Albert Pinkham Ryder was an eccentric American visionary painter whose moonlit seascapes and literary subjects occupy a singular place in American art. Living in deliberate isolation in New York, he built up thick, luminous surfaces over years of reworking, creating paintings that seem to glow from within. His visionary romanticism influenced a generation of American modernists, including Marsden Hartley.
