Ferdinand Hodler was the most important Swiss painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His monumental paintings of the Alps, Swiss national history, and allegorical figures developed a distinctive style he called 'Parallelism' — a rhythmic repetition of forms that creates a hypnotic, hieratic effect. He is regarded as a forerunner of Expressionism and a major figure of Symbolism.
