Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton, was the dominant figure of Victorian academic painting and one of the most successful artists of his era. President of the Royal Academy, he created monumental paintings of classical and biblical subjects with an exquisite attention to form, drapery, and idealized beauty. His house in Holland Park, now a museum, is itself a masterpiece of Aesthetic interior design.
