Ilya Repin was the preeminent Russian realist painter of the 19th century. His monumental canvases captured the epic sweep of Russian history, the lives of ordinary people, and the psychological depths of his subjects with extraordinary skill. Works like 'Barge Haulers on the Volga' brought the suffering of the working class to the canvas with unflinching honesty.
