Portrait of Jean-Léon Gérôme

Jean-Léon Gérôme

French 1824–1904

Jean-Léon Gérôme was the leading Orientalist painter of the 19th century, celebrated for his meticulously researched scenes of life in Egypt, the Middle East, and Turkey. His technically brilliant canvases of slave markets, harems, and classical subjects blend academic realism with an exotic sensationalism. He was also a pioneering sculptor, creating polychrome works that combined painting and sculpture.
