Portrait of John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent

American 1856–1925

John Singer Sargent was the 'greatest portrait painter of his time' according to his contemporaries — an American artist who became the preeminent portraitist of Edwardian high society. His bravura brushwork, virtuosic facility with light and fabric, and psychological acuity made him enormously sought after. Late in his career he turned increasingly to landscapes and murals, leaving portraiture largely behind.
