John William Waterhouse was a British painter who came to be associated with the Pre-Raphaelites for his richly detailed mythological and literary subjects. His paintings of women from classical mythology — the Lady of Shalott, Hylas, Circe, Ophelia — are among the most beloved images of the Victorian era. He combined academic realism with an Impressionist approach to landscape and light.
