Kanō Eitoku was the defining Japanese painter of the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the supreme master of the monumental decorative screen. Commissioned by Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi to decorate their castles, he developed a style of breathtaking scale — gold-leafed screens with boldly painted pines, plum trees, and lions that transformed interior space into something overwhelming and magnificent.
