Lovis Corinth was a German painter who moved from robust academic realism to a looser, more Expressionist style after suffering a stroke in 1911. His late work — charged with a new urgency, the brushwork freer and more expressive — is considered his finest. He was a leading figure of the Berlin Secession and one of the most important German painters of the early 20th century.
