Mahmoud Said was the most important Egyptian painter of the 20th century. Working as a judge by day while painting in his spare time, he developed a distinctive style that drew on Post-Impressionism, Byzantine mosaics, and ancient Egyptian art to create vibrant images of Egyptian life — Nile fishermen, women at the market, village scenes — that are unmistakably, proudly Egyptian. He is considered the father of modern Egyptian painting.
