Odilon Redon was a French Symbolist painter and printmaker whose visionary imagery bridged the 19th and 20th centuries. His dreamlike works — floating eyes, fantastical flowers, mythological creatures in radiant color — explored the inner life of the imagination long before Surrealism gave it a name. He was a major influence on the Surrealists and remained an intensely private, singular artist.
