Saturnino Herrán was a Mexican painter who died at 31, leaving behind a small but extraordinary body of work that helped define Mexican national identity in visual art. His paintings of indigenous workers, mestizo life, and pre-Columbian mythology broke from European academic traditions to establish an authentically Mexican modernism. Rivera called him 'the greatest painter Mexico has produced.'
