Tarsila do Amaral was a Brazilian modernist painter and the central figure of the Brazilian Modern Art movement. She studied in Paris under Fernand Léger and synthesized European modernism with Brazilian landscape, folklore, and indigenous iconography to create a uniquely national visual language. Her 1928 painting 'Abaporu' became one of the most important works in Brazilian art history and the inspiration for the Anthropophagist movement.
