Portrait of Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Japanese 1798–1861

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition. His dynamic warrior prints, fantastical landscapes populated with mythological creatures, and imaginative compositions pushed the genre into new territory. A devoted cat lover whose humor and inventiveness shine through his work, he managed to satirize the Shogunate through coded imagery while remaining one of the most popular artists of the Edo period.
